DTE Energy is a leading energy and energy technology provider. DTE did the best it could to stay in compliance and make information readily available to employees with its own system. Coordinating thousands of Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDSs) cost the utility company time and money in the form of manpower to enter and update its database and IT costs associated with maintaining an in-house system. To increase its level of compliance, and to provide employees with the information needed in the event of an industrial incident, DTE concluded that a more systematic process for managing MSDS information had to be put in place. Jess Kraus IV is president of 3E Co., which provides companies with hazardous materials information and services. Kraus is originally from Sacramento. He moved to San Diego in the 1980s to attend University of California San Diego. After graduating, he went to work for General Dynamics, and in 1986 he started 3E as a moonlighting gig, acting as a hazardous materials consultant for various local companies. In 1988, he started working full time on his business. Today, the Carlsbad company has about 200 employees.
