If you manufacture textiles, batteries, or electronics, you are aware of the complexity involved in maintaining a transparent supply chain. The concept of circularity, whereby the product lifecycle does not end at disposal, is now a commonly discussed approach; one that is linked to a company’s brand reputation for sustainability.

One upcoming European Union (EU) requirement, the Digital Product Passport (DPP) is set to revolutionize how manufactures, importers, suppliers, and others involved in the making of a product access Safety Data Sheets (SDSs), labels, and certifications (etc.).  Legislation is on the path to finalization and although effective dates in different parts of Europe are not yet totally clear, Forbes anticipates that by 2030 time will be up for those in the textile industry.

We are proud to announce that 3E is an active stakeholder in the CIRPASS initiative, funded by the European Commission (via DIGITAL EUROPE). An explanation of our DPP offering can be found in D3.1 Annex: DPP Related Initiatives. DPPs from 3E Exchange are live and interoperable now and are designed to flex to changing standards as DPP requirements roll out in the EU and beyond.

What is 3E’s role with regard to CIRPASS-2?

Three experts from 3E will be actively involved in stakeholder group conversations on the evolution and rollout of DPPs.

  • Miriam Schoepel, Senior Chemical Regulatory Compliance Consultant from our office in Germany will serve on Expert Working Group 1 (EWG1): Observatory Board: European and Global Regulatory Context along with Eveyln Ritter, Senior Solutions Engineer from the US.
  • Lori Bestervelt, Senior Chemical Business Advisor for the Regulatory Consulting team based in the US and Miriam will serve on EWG3: Textile Stakeholders Group.
  • Miriam and Evelyn will serve on the Community of Practice (CoP) expert group, which is restricted to PIM/PLM/ERP software vendors.

Why are we participating?

The main basis of participation is to support our customers and ultimately, the future of the circular economy. We strive to stay involved with CIRPASS because it is key to our DPP strategy. By providing expert advice that aids in crafting the data exchange standards, we are well positioned to help our customers across industries. If we keep up to date on the technological standards employed by the EU, then we are in a prime position to proactively adjust our product features, preventing delays for our customers.

Our customers are already implementing DPPs, specifically through 3E Exchange [link to product webpage]. Our goal is to be flexible, to contribute but also to learn from others engaged in these workgroups and to help our customers achieve their goals of participating in a circular economy.
